The Scent of Love

Readers who have been following me for some time know that I’ve recently made a shift in the nature of my stories, that I’ve been adding much stronger romance storylines in my novels. Frankly, this has not been an easy task. By nature, I’m a women’s fiction author. I write strong emotion and love to explore how and why characters make changes in their lives.

That’s not to say that I don’t appreciate falling in love. In fact, yesterday my husband and I celebrated thirty-seven years of marriage. All those years back, I fell for a guy who was a blast and we still thoroughly enjoy living the big adventure together.

Which brings me to my point.

As I said, writing romance comes a little harder to me. For example, this morning I was crafting a first date scene. The guy notices the girl smells nice. I wanted to have him think SHE SMELLS LIKE ________ (fill in the blank). In order to be authentic, I called my husband and asked him what a guy would say. Would she smell like freshly baked cookies? Perhaps lilacs?

No.

My hubby’s quick response had me on the floor in giggles.

This was his answer:

“She would smell like pine trees.”

What???  PINE TREES??  Are you kidding me?

All these years I’ve been purchasing expensive Ralph Lauren and Givenchy perfumes–when all I had to do to turn him on was poke a sprig of pine behind my ear!

Maybe, like me, you wonder what makes a guy notice a girl and then fall in love. I invite you to check out my new short romances called the LOVE ON VACATION series. These books are set in the resort town of Sun Valley, Idaho and feature unlikely couples who push back insurmountable obstacles in order to live happily ever after.
