Seven Things I Learned in Yesterday’s Tornadoes

As many of you know, the DFW area got a little wild yesterday with sudden (and multiple) twisters that had some of us running for our storm rooms. Like most traumatic experiences, the unexpected weather held a few lessons. Here are seven ways I was educated:

  1. A writer should take a shower every morning, just in case she finds herself on CNN with no make-up and hair pulled into a clippy.
  2. Never put off doing laundry. What if your dirty clothes end up in your neighbor’s tree?
  3. When life gets scary, a large bag of BBQ chips makes everything a little better.
  4. If you panic and need sympathy, don’t call your man. He’ll just tell you to stop crying and get in the storm room.
  5. Patio furniture can fly.
  6. A stew pot makes a great safety helmet.
  7. Facebook friends are a praying bunch of folks!

On the serious side, my heart goes out to all those who suffered damage. I pray for quick restoration of their property (and for all the soon-to-be overworked insurance adjusters). And I do appreciate all the prayers I know went up within minutes of my frantic Facebook post. I tend to believe bended knees across this nation contributed to no major injuries or fatalities yesterday. Praise God!

  1. Oh, wow, Kellie. Your 7 things are totally going to change my world. Now I must take a shower first thing in the morning and start a load of wash. :-0 Great tips, and I’m just so grateful you and my other Texas friends are all okay. My love.

  2. That’s the exact reason I always try to get my laundry and shower done first thing in the morning. You never, never, never know when you might end up on the evening news.

I love facebook for the prayer line it provides as well.

Have I mention how pretty your site is? I feel like I should be sitting down with a cup of tea in one of those dainty tea sets with the flowers and gold stripes painted on them.

    Back to writing now. =D

    1. Thanks, Jackie. I’ll pass your sweet comments on to my web designer, Matt Jones (Jones House Creative)

  3. I follow some of those principles each summer as hurricane season heats up in Miami: showering early and keeping up with the laundry. I hadn’t thought about the stew pot, however.

    1. I’m a transplant from the Pacific Northwest, Kaye. I had no idea what a tornado siren even sounded like until I moved here. You tend to get a bit creative, when storms hit so close.

  4. So glad you were all okay. I’ll have to remember that stewpot idea if we get more warnings in VA this year! Definitely was praying for everyone in TX, and seems like there were some miraculous examples of God protecting people there!

    1. Thanks for commenting, Heather. And thanks for the prayers. No significant injuries and no fatalities had to be the result of a lot of those people praying.

  5. So grateful you and my Texas friends came through the storm okay. Wow, that was a wild one. Glad to see your sense of humor weathered the storms. 🙂

    Hugs to you, sweet friend!

    1. I drove by the damaged area near our home just this morning on the way to get groceries. I feel so bad for all those in my neighborhood who suffered loss. Right off I-20 between Green Oaks and Kelly Elliott, there is a sea of blue-tarped roofs.
